Curious? Unsure? You're not alone

Most small businesses are somewhere between curious about AI and already using it, but unsure. One or more of these may sound familiar.

Already using it, not sure it's safe

You or your team already use AI tools, but you're not sure what client or business information is going into them and where that ends up.

Too many tools to choose from

Everyone is selling something, and it's hard to tell which tools are worth paying for.

Tried it...didn't stick

You've experimented with a few things, but nothing has become part of how the business runs.

No time to work it out

Running the business comes first, so working out AI keeps moving to next week.

From curious to confident.

A practical path from too many options to a few uses that work for your business.

Where you are

Plenty of tools, not enough time.

You know AI could save you hours, but working out what's worth using, and what's safe with client information, keeps slipping down the list.

I help you pick the few uses that matter to your business, set them up sensibly, and check they're actually paying off.

* I don't do AI for the sake of it. If there's a better option that doesn't use AI, I'll tell you.

Where you land

More time on the work you do best.

AI handles the repetitive tasks, you know your client information is protected, and you can see what it's saving you.

Look up from the task list.

Saving time on today's work is a good start. But AI is also changing how whole industries work, and some of today's tasks may not exist in a few years. I'll help you spot those shifts early, so the time you invest goes into work that will still matter.

Two connected ways to help.

One helps you use AI safely and sensibly. The other helps you put it to work. Most small businesses need a bit of both.

AI Strategy and Safe Use

I help you see how AI is already being used, decide where it's worth focusing, and set simple rules your team can follow.

ForOwner-directorsBusiness partnersSmall boards
  • Plain-English AI briefings for you and your team
  • A clear picture of current AI use
  • Simple acceptable-use guidance
  • Priorities and who owns what
  • Sensible privacy, security, and human-review rules
  • Oversight that fits the size of your business
  • Looking ahead: how AI could change your industry, and what that means for your business

Practical Implementation Support

I help you choose where to start, pick the right tools, and check the results before you commit further.

ForOwner-directorsManagersTeam leads
  • Finding the tasks where AI will save real time
  • Choosing the right tool, assistant, or model for the job
  • The business outcome before the tool
  • Help with supplier and technical decisions
  • A small, controlled trial
  • Clear results to decide whether to keep going

I oversee the product and delivery decisions, and work alongside your team and specialist suppliers where needed.

Talk about implementation

Who I work with.

Direct, practical support for owner-directors and small teams who want AI to work for their business.

People I usually work with

  • Owner-directors
  • Business owners and partners
  • Managers in growing teams
  • Small and advisory boards

Businesses that value direct support

I work with businesses of up to around 200 people, from sole operators to growing teams, that want practical help rather than a large consulting program.

illawarra.ai is based in Wollongong. I work in person with businesses in the Illawarra and Greater Sydney, and online with businesses across New South Wales and Australia.

Industries I currently work with

  • SaaS and software
  • Engineering
  • Accounting firms
  • Solopreneurs and independent consultants

Start with the outcome, not the tool.

Most AI advice starts with what the technology can do, then looks for places to use it. I work the other way. First we agree what your business needs to achieve and find what's holding it back. Only then do we ask where AI genuinely helps.

  1. 01Outcome

    Agree what success looks like.

Define the result you're after (more capacity, growth, or quality or less risk) in measurable terms. Set a timeframe and note the constraints that matter. AI doesn't come up yet.

  2. 02Understand

    Find the real bottleneck.

Map how the work actually flows today: people, processes, systems, data, and any AI already in use. Record a baseline and identify the constraint that limits the outcome. Often it's data or process, not a missing tool.

  3. 03Reimagine

    Explore what could be different.

Look at options on three levels: do the current task better, redesign the workflow, or rethink what the business offers. Every idea is a hypothesis to test, not a promise.

  4. 04Prioritise

    Choose, with guardrails.

Weigh value, feasibility, time to value, cost, and how ready your team is. Privacy, security, and quality risk is a gate, not a score: if it can't be managed, the idea doesn't proceed. You leave knowing what to do now, what to explore next, and what to leave alone.

  5. 05Act

    Prove it, then decide.

Run a small, controlled pilot with a named owner, human review, and clear conditions for stopping. Measure it against the baseline, then scale it, change it, or stop it. Then look again, because fixing one bottleneck reveals the next.

The method is the same for a ten-person firm after a quick win and for a board working through AI strategy and governance. The depth changes, not the approach.

The technology keeps changing. The approach stays the same.

Learn it deeply, work out what it makes possible, and help people use it to achieve something that matters.

I came to technology by accident and stayed because I enjoyed making it useful. An unplanned start in networking became a long technical career.

Since then, I have run a small multinational, taught myself coding, built with ecommerce, developed marketing capability, and led products across SaaS, productivity, Business Intelligence, and AI. That experience helps me connect business needs, technology choices, delivery, and accountability.

I work provider-neutrally across hosted assistants, local models, and implementation environments. I see governance and implementation as closely connected.

Common questions

About fit, independence, and what to expect.

Where do you work?

illawarra.ai is based in Wollongong. I work in person with businesses in the Illawarra and Greater Sydney, and online with businesses across New South Wales and Australia.

Do we need an existing AI strategy?

No. We can begin with the decision, concern, opportunity, or workflow in front of you. The first step is to make the current state visible and decide what is worth pursuing.

Are you tied to particular AI providers?

No. I work provider-neutrally. The business outcome, information, constraints, and people involved should guide the choice of provider, assistant, local model, harness, or supporting system.

What's the difference between the two services?

Strategy and safe use helps you see how AI is being used, set priorities, and agree simple rules. Implementation support takes one chosen opportunity through tool and supplier decisions, a small trial, and a clear result. They're separate services, but they work best together.

What happens in the first conversation?

Bring one AI question and explain the current decision, concern, opportunity, or workflow. We'll work out what matters, what a useful next step could be, and whether I can help. You'll hear from me directly.

Have an AI question? Let's talk it through.

Tell me about the decision, concern, opportunity, or workflow in front of you. We'll work out what matters and whether I'm the right fit.
